Public Lighting Management

SmartLuz is the public lighting service concessionaire in Rio de Janeiro. Since September 2020 it has been carrying out all the maintenance of the public lighting infrastructure in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Over the next 20 years we will offer continuous improvements in service to the population of the Marvelous City.

A more efficient Public Lighting

More than 450,000 lighting fixtures in the city will be switched to LED , in a concession that will last 20 years with programmed investments of over R$ 1.4 billion.

Smart and Sustainable City

Smart Luz in partnership with the city is creating the most advanced Smart City in Latin America.

At first, more than 10,000 cameras will be installed, 5,000 free Wi-Fi access points for the population, interconnection of all traffic light access points in the city, connection of multiple sensors and construction of a new Operational Control Center to serve the city and citizens of Rio de Janeiro!

The main objective is for Rio de Janeiro to be the most sustainable city in Brazil with improved citizenship services, fewer accidents, increased safety, and better traffic for all

Replacement of 442,316 conventional luminaires by LED luminaires

The replacement of conventional luminaires by LED luminaires will generate electricity savings of over 60%, a significant improvement in the quality of public lighting in the city of Rio de Janeiro with a much smaller environmental footprint.

Remote Management

70% of the luminaires will be managed by a remote management system that will allow them to be fully controlled remotely.

The remote management will be connected to the LED lighting system and will allow for a much more efficient management of the entire public lighting network and additional reductions in energy consumption.

Decorative and accent lighting

The modernization of public lighting in Rio de Janeiro will also bring artistic lighting to special and prominent places in the city.

The more than 38 km of Orlas and more than 130 squares, parks and monuments in the city will receive special lighting projects.

Video Monitoring

Installation of ten thousand video image capture points, in locations to be defined by the MUNICIPALITY, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, covering the supply of equipment, software, accessories, preparation of projects and execution of services for implementation.

Free Wifi

Installation of 5,000 (five thousand) "WI-FI" ACCESS POINTS in public lighting units, providing public and free access to the internet and ensuring the population's full-time connectivity, 24 (twenty-four) hours a day, 7 ( seven) days a week in locations to be defined by the Municipality.

Traffic Light Access Points

SmartLuz will be responsible for implementing a communication network with traffic light controllers, through the installation of at least 2,000 (two thousand) Traffic Light Access Points which will provide connection to the Rio Operations Center (COR), ensuring full-time connectivity, 24 (twenty four) hours a day, 7 (seven) days a week.

Flood Prevention

Implementation of intelligence and connectivity solutions in manholes, located in the main flooded areas mapped in the city of Rio de Janeiro, including filters and sensors installed to detect when manholes have solid waste that impedes the flow of water.

Implementation and Operation of the Operational Control Center.

The Operational Control Center being built on the land next to the COR (Centro Operações Rio) will expand the capabilities of the current COR and will guarantee the integrated management and control of all services of operation and maintenance, modernization and efficiency of public lighting units, special lighting, Tele-Management System, complementary services and the implementation, operation and maintenance of the units Smart Rio, subsidizing service and technical support throughout the Concession.

This building after the end of the concession will revert to the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro along with the modernized public lighting infrastructure

Changing the city's image

It is a sub-concession contract (PPP) for the public lighting network for 20 years, where the Sub-concessionaire is the Rioluz and the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro.
